about
Wo we are
We are a community-based organization dedicated to assisting children living on the streets of Jinja City, Jinja, Uganda. Our program was founded in 2011 by Allison Edwards with a primary objective of helping these children leave street life behind and reintegrate with their families in their respective communities.

The problem
Every year hundreds of children end up on the street where they are exposed to an unhealthy conditions and circumstances on the street. Many children leave their families for street life for various reasons some of which include poverty, relational challenges in their homes and pressure from their peers.

The Solution we offer
We rehabilitate, home-trace, reintegrate, monitor the transition of children from street life to a family life, and empower reintegrated households by educating them and/or empowering their caregivers according to their needs.

They have porridge for breakfast followed by bible study and physical education. Then break off into classes that are taught by our qualified teachers. Many of the children have not been in school in years and for some, this is their first opportunity to learn so they are assessed based on their knowledge.
They are in class until 1:30pm where they then have posho and beans for lunch, a typical filling Ugandan food. After lunch we do a variety of different activities including arts & crafts, football and individual or group counselling sessions.
To do this, our Social Workers home trace the children to see where they have come from. Thy then counsel the families through the issues that cause the child to turn to the streets. If it is possible for the child to be resettled, this is the ideal situation. We then register the child in school. We help pay school fees which takes great pressure off the family but we do require the families to contribute in some way, however small.
We keep in contact regularly seeing how he whole family is doing. When home situation is not safe for the child to return home, we then look into placing then in residential homes or foster families.

Some children show interest in being resettled home or with a different family member quite quickly while others take a longer time going through the rehabilitation process usually due to being addicted to sniffing paraffin or drinking alcohol which they take to numb the pain of street life.

There are many different reasons as to why a child has left home, some because their parents have died and they are left as orphans, others have fled abusive situations and some families are living in such poverty that they are unable and unwilling to care for them.
